Surf Skate Science values collaboration. Working with others creates an opportunity to learn, to brainsotrm and both one another to think outside of your normal range, to learn new perspectives, and to do even better things together.
Often, we look up to others in the areas we are passionate about. We might look at their approach and try to duplicate it or spin our own take on it. Pablo Picasso was once noted to say, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” Does that make imitation flattering? Or just a reproduction?
Advancements in STEAM is forged others before us. We can take the inventions and creations of others and we can follow it, improve it, or take it in a completely different direction.
Surf Skate Science works to be highly collaborative, with students working together to grasp new information using multiple access points. As a homeschool program, we
work with a variety of ags and abilities. Students learn to share responsibility and compromise by working on group projects that incorporate multiple disciplines. Many of our projects involve teamwork and thoughtful dialogue in which students exchange ideas.
The need for STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education is critical, especially because continue to be more than 3 million job openings in STEM-related fields each year! The Every Student Succeeds Act, which replaced No Child Left Behind in 2015,
s in public schools.
STEAM utilizes the arts along with traditional STEM subjects as “access points for g
uiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking,” according to EducationCloset, a digital learning hub for educators. “The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process,”
STEAM is an integrated approach to learning which requires an intentional connection between learning and the ability to implement what you learn. Students make more real-life connections so that school becomes a place where you don't just go to learn but instead school becomes the entire experience of learning itself.
We are always learning, always growing, always experimenting. School doesn’t have to be a place, but rather a frame of mind! STEAM education can be a tool for explosive growth for learners, increased social-emotional connections, and the foundation for the innovators of tomorrow. When a student learns a concept and puts it into action but collaborating with a team, we are cultivating progressive thinkers that will change our future.
Surf Skate Science is not only happy to create a atmosphere of collaboration with our students but we also strive to collaborate with the community. From organizations like Surfrider Foundation, Gumbo Limbo, the Surfing Florida Museum, Sandoway, Wahine Warriors and others; to educational establishments like Florida Atlantic University , FIU and Nova; to local businesses like Apple and Bird Surfboards, we are truly thankful to those willing to collaborate to create passionate, life-long learners.
