Teach Your Kids Civics This Summer and Advocate for Skateparks

Learning doesn’t have to stop over the summer—especially when it’s fueled by purpose and passion. South Florida is one of the most underserved regions in the country when it comes to free public skateparks, but together, we have an opportunity to change that.

This summer, students can step into real-world civics by advocating for skateparks at local government meetings or through impactful emails to city leaders. It’s a chance to learn how government works, practice public speaking, and discover the power of their voice.

Parents, we need you too—your example and support can help shift outdated perceptions of skateboarding and inspire the next generation of civic changemakers. Let’s advocate, educate, and roll toward a better future.

What Is Skatepark Advocacy?

Skatepark advocacy involves actively promoting the need for safe, accessible, and well-designed public skateparks in our communities. These efforts raise awareness about the benefits of skateboarding—including its positive effects on physical and mental health, youth development, and community building.

Advocates help change misconceptions about skateboarding, emphasizing its ability to reduce illicit behavior and provide purpose-driven activities for young people.

Key Goals & Benefits of Skatepark Advocacy

  • Safety & Accessibility: Skateparks offer a controlled, dedicated space for riders—far safer than street skating.

  • Community Building: These parks bring people together across ages and backgrounds, creating a strong local network.

  • Youth Development: Skateboarding builds discipline, resilience, creativity, and peer mentorship.

  • Reduced Illicit Behavior: Giving youth a place to belong helps reduce crime and loitering in public areas.

  • Economic Impact: Quality skateparks attract visitors, support local business, and open the door for events and tourism.

Advocacy Strategies That Work

  • Raise Awareness: Share skatepark facts with neighbors, leaders, and local organizations.

  • Build Partnerships: Connect with local skate shops, youth groups, and churches to amplify your voice.

  • Gather Support: Ask PTAs, business owners, and nonprofits for letters of endorsement.

  • Present a Strong Case: Outline the benefits, design vision, and funding details clearly.

  • Address Concerns: Respond to fears about noise or safety with facts and solutions.

  • Involve the Skate Community: Let skaters help shape the park to meet real needs.

  • Use Data: Show local demand with surveys and population info to strengthen your case.

Advocacy in Action: Help Us Speak Up for Boca Raton’s New Skatepark

Plans are moving quickly for Boca Raton’s proposed 55,000–60,000 sq. ft. skatepark and pump track at North Park. This new facility will replace the Tim Huxhold Skate Park near City Hall and include pump tracks and features for all wheeled sports—skateboards, bikes, scooters, and more.

Unlike typical parks designed only for youth, this one will serve all ages. Its location is ideal: safely away from major traffic but close to neighborhoods and businesses. Most importantly, funding is already secured—meaning the park can be built now, not delayed for years.

However, a few residents are voicing concerns based on outdated perceptions. But studies consistently show that:

  • Skateparks are quieter than pickleball courts.

  • They reduce crime by giving youth a safe, constructive outlet.

  • They foster strong community ties.
