Have you ever wondered how a surfboard is made? At Surf Skate Science, students and surf enthusiasts don’t just ride waves — they learn the science behind them. Our Surfboard Shaping Experience is a hands-on workshop where participants design, shape, and customize their own surfboard alongside experienced shapers in our professional shaping room. Over the course of 3–7 days, students transform a raw foam blank into a finished board while learning the physics, engineering, and artistry behind surfboard design.

Whether you're a beginner, homeschool student, STEM enthusiast, or lifelong surfer, this experience blends creativity, craftsmanship, and science in one unforgettable project.

A Real STEM Experience Through Surfboard Design

​

Surfboard shaping is more than a craft — it’s an applied STEM lab.

​

As participants build their board, they explore concepts from physics, engineering, materials science, and hydrodynamics.

Students learn how small design choices affect how a board moves through water, turns on a wave, and generates speed.

This program aligns beautifully with project-based STEM learning, giving students a real-world engineering challenge with a functional outcome: a surfboard they built themselves.

What You Will Learn

Participants learn the complete surfboard design process, including:

 

• Hydrodynamics & Wave Physic-How surfboards interact with moving water and how design affects speed, lift, and control.

• Surfboard Engineering - Understanding rocker, rails, concave, volume, and outline.

• Materials Science - Working with foam blanks, fiberglass, resin, and structural reinforcement.

• Design & Measurement - Using templates, measurements, and geometry to design a balanced board.

• Hand Tool Skills - Learning shaping techniques using planers, sanding tools, and shaping blocks.

• Art & Board Graphics - Designing custom artwork, color work, resin tints, or collaborating with local artists.

• Problem Solving & Iteration - Making adjustments during the shaping process and understanding how design impacts performance.

 

Mini Syllabus: The Board Building Process

Each shaping experience is customized based on the board design and participant schedule, but typically includes the following stages.

​

Day 1 – Board Design & Surf Science

• Understanding surfboard anatomy
• Choosing board type and size
• Hydrodynamics and wave interaction
• Outlining the board template

 

Day 2 – Rough Shaping

• Cutting the outline
• Planing the deck and bottom
• Creating rocker and thickness flow

 

Day 3 – Precision Shaping

• Rail design and contour shaping
• Bottom contours (concave, vee, etc.)
• Final sanding and shaping refinement

 

Day 4 – Artwork & Personalization

• Board graphics and color work
• Resin tinting or artwork planning
• Working with local artists for custom designs

 

Day 5 – Glassing & Structure

• Fiberglass lamination
• Resin chemistry and curing
• Strength and weight considerations

 

Day 6–7 – Finishing

• Sanding and polishing
• Fin installation
• Final inspection and surf readiness

Our shaping rooms are designed for comfort, creativity, and safety. Participants work with professional shaping tools in a collaborative environment that encourages learning and experimentation. This space is built to feel part workshop, part maker lab, and part surf culture hub.

Safety is always our top priority. Participants receive guidance on proper tool use, shaping room procedures, and fiberglass handling. All participants must follow posted safety rules and complete required waivers before beginning their project.

Up to 6'11" – $650
Up to 7'11" – $725
Up to 8'11" – $800
Up to 9'11" – $900

 

Basic color or artwork may be included depending on complexity. Advanced designs such as resin panels, inlays, gloss coats, and specialty art may have additional costs.

We can also coordinate with local artists for fully custom surfboard artwork.
